About Me

I am a consultant urological surgeon based in Chennai. I completed my undergraduate education in Stanley Medical College, Chennai in 1989 following which I did my postgraduate training in general surgery and subsequent higher training in urology in the United Kingdom.

I was a consultant urologist in north Wales prior to my return to India in late 2010.I trained with a special interest in endourology and minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic and robotic urological surgery)

I have performed several laparoscopic urological procedures for both benign and malignant disease since my return to India, including laparoendoscopic single site surgery (LESS)

Urology

  • What is urology?Urology is a surgical specialty that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract, as well as the male reproductive tract. The urinary tract starts right from the kidney (including the adrenal gland) down to the urethra.
  • What does a typical urologist deal with or do?
In general, all urologists are trained to deal with problems like benign prostatic disease, urinary tract stones, erectile dysfunction and benign scrotal disease. Most urologists, especially in the developed world, develop a special interest in specific sub-sections or certain technologies

Urology

  • Is urology the same as nephrology?Urology is a surgical specialty, whilst nephrology deals with medical conditions related to the kidney. Nephrologists are physicians, whilst urologists are surgeons. Typically, urologists and nephrologists work closely as several conditions require shared care – for example, in chronic kidney disease (CKD), where the nephrologist manages the ‘medical’ side of the problem and once it reaches end-stage, kidney transplant is performed by the urologist.
